Red carpet makeup tutorial

Getting ready for a red carpet or bridal event?

Today I'm going to take you behind-the-scenes and give you some tips when doing make up for a client at their home/hotel.

So, when you are working on a private client or celebrity for a special event like a red carpet, you do want to make sure that you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to having her sit in the chair, because you want to make sure that all of your products are laid out compact and nicely.

Don't bring a huge collection of products – or lots of suitcases because you don't want to take up too much space in their home or hotel. Another thing I have learnt in doing this for a long time is make sure that you have products that are recognisable, and high-end products are always best because if a client is paying you out of their own budget to get them ready and make them look perfect for the red carpet you want to make sure there are products that you know are going to do a really good job. You don't want to use drugstore foundations and products, or low end products. These low-end products may work fine and do an ok job but presentation is key. If you are a "professional" working makeup artist, use professional products in your kit!

You want to make sure that everything is impeccably clean and organised and well laid out. You don't want to be fumbling for anything. You want to make sure you know where everything is because clients do not want to sit in the chair for an extremely long period of time. I am a bit of a germaphobe so my kit is impeccably clean and thoroughly sanitised - not only my brushes but containers, eye pencils, all powder pallets, eyeshadow pallets, etc. A dirty or makeup smudged kit is not a good look!

So, make sure you have everything in arms reach when your client sits down in your chair. If I can, I position the table with my products laid out behind the client so she is siting up front. The reason being, if you want to work fast, you don't want the client questioning every item you pick up.

Cheers!

Another thing that I sometimes bring is my own high standing make up chair. Many homes will have a bar stool, usually in the kitchen, and this will elevate the client so you won't have to be bending over, which is havoc for your back!

If bringing my high chair isn't possible (eg, if I can't park close to the home or there's no hotel parking) if space permits, I will sit sideways to the client so we are at eye level. However, if you have to stand you want to work fast to keep bending to a minimum.

Eyes first

When I work with a celebrity client or bridal client I do their eyes first. Why? Because when I come to a person's house/hotel and they only have 1-2 hrs to get ready they're going to be busy taking calls from friends, publicist, stylist who's maybe in the room, so they're trying on gowns, etc. Very busy. So at least I can get eyes and lashes done if she needs to move around. Also doing eyes first gives the client a moment to relax by sitting still with their eyes closed. Then I can work on the foundation and concealer much faster as time permits.

Another thing is, I always use foundation a tad darker than the natural skin tone and bring on to neck and shoulders. Because, when photos are taken the flash can sometimes lighten the foundation on the skin. The flash bounces off especially if an spf is used.

Lips last

Often the client may want a bite to eat or a glass of champs, which may take the lipstick you painstakingly put on, custom blended (of course) off!! So do lips last to save any wasted time.

That's it in a nutshell! If you have any tips, please share x
